Stone Town Tour
You will start with this 1hr to 2hr walking guided tour of historical zanzibar stone town. Stone town tour is in unesco´s world heritage list. The tour guide will take you on a walk around the jumbling colorful alleys of stone town, passing palaces and arabian residences with beautifully carved wooden doors. Cinnamon sticks, cardamom, cloves and all imaginable spices can be bought in the clamorous darajani market. The old fort will be visited and if lucky some local artists will entertain you for a while. You will also see the house of wonders, the old catholic church, the former slave market and the local fruit market “marikiti” in kiswahili (the official language in tanzania).
Prison Island
At the end of the Stone Town tour, you will catch a 25min boat ride to prison island. Prison island, also known as changuu island, is a small island spreading across 5.6kms. Overcoming its turbulent history, changuu island has become a must-see jewel of zanzibar with the highlight attraction of being a large home for tortoises, some as old as almost 200yrs. Other things to do on the island include having a walk through the prison ruins, snorkeling at the deeper water levels or chilling at the sandy beach having a sunbath or swimming in the sea. Be sure to bring your swim wear on this excursion. You can spend about 2hrs here before returning to stone town where our driver will be waiting for you.
Spice tour
You will then proceed for a tour of the famous spice farms on the island. You explore the locals in their spice farm activities and explore the reason why zanzibar is referred to as the spice island. Spices have always been important in zanzibar and in the late 19th century, they were the main income for the island. Today about 15 farms are growing spices to be used in the zanzibar cuisine and for cosmetics and medicine. Spices are important on the island and zanzibar is the world’s largest exporter of cloves. During this guided tour in the spice farm in the kijichi area, you will see, smell and taste spices such as cloves, cardamoms, cinnamon, vanilla, pepper and ginger. You will also see lots of tropical fruits and herbal plants. You will then enjoy some amazing locally made food with spices from the farm.
After the delicious local lunch, you will be dropped to your beach hotel for check in and rest of day at leisure.
